Is Gavin Getting His Cast Off For Good???

Going into the doctor's office.

In the waiting room...

Waiting to see if the cast is coming off for good.

Yay! Getting the cast cut off!

Ewww! Gavin's hairy, crusty leg.

And... Bummer! Getting a cast back on.

Leaving the doctor's office with another new cast

Gavin had a doctor's appointment yesterday to see about getting his cast off for good. We were really hoping they would take the cast off because Gavin's birthday is coming up and we thought it would be nice for him to have the cast off. After they cut off his cast they x-rayed it and the doctor gave me the choice to leave the cast off or not. Hey, that's not fair to make me decide! The doctor explained that if this kind of break had happened to an adult they would have put a rod in the leg, but since Gavin is so young he thinks that as Gavin grows, the bone will straighten itself out and be okay. Then the doctor told me that if Gavin is a calm, easy-going child we could get away without a cast. I had to laugh. Gavin tried to ride his bike the other day, with his cast. He runs (scoots) around and jumps on the bed, with his cast. We decided in the end it would be best to put another cast on for 2 more weeks. At least this cast is a walking cast, so he will be able to walk on it as soon as they get in the cast shoe they ordered for us. Two months is just too long for a 3 year old to have a cast on!

Is Gav ok? It sure sucks to be tempted with no cast and then to have to get another one on. However, it sure is better to have it for 2 more weeks than start the whole process over when he breaks it again before it is healed all of the way!

Thank goodness it is not quite summer yet!

Unfortunately it is just the beginning. You asked for it when you had 3 boys. With boys you definitely visit the ER more (Warren has proven that) and with girls you have to put up with a flood of emotions on a daily basis. My kids have balanced each other out so far. Although, Haley has lately become very interested into getting into trouble. No casts or stitches yet.

Bummer! But it sounds like it's for the best and the long run. He so needs a pool party when he's done!!

Yuck! I remember this happening to Kirra. She had broken her arm, just above her wrist. They took her cast off and put it back on twice. They wanted to make sure it was strong enough. The worst part is it was during the summer and on her birthday as well. She even had to start 1st grade with it! Poor Gavin. But seeing his "moves" with the cast on, like the kicking that looks like he's going to flip over, was definitely a wise decision to keep it on. He's definitely active and ADVENTUROUS! No fear in that boy!!

Poor kid. But better to let it heal right.

Once Gavin gets that shoe and he doesn't have to use crutches he will forget he even has a cast on! He will be everywhere...I love the pictures with him walking with the crutches...he is awesome!

Bummer! Well, at least there is an end in sight. He can at least walk on it now with the walking cast.
